Sarah
WHEN JAKE ASKED ME IF IâD GO BACK TO THE CLIFFS with him, my gut reaction was No freaking way. He sounded so solemn though that I would have done anything to make him feel better. The fact that he asked me instead of Courtney or one of his teammates made it seem important. We were friends. Friends supported each other.
Between basketball practice, play rehearsal, and my shifts at Adeleâs and his Dr. Hipster appointments, we came up with a miraculously free window of time on the Monday before Thanksgiving.
He picked me up about a block away from my building. Iâd insisted on that, on the off chance that Ash was somehow walking past my place at the exact moment Jake was picking me up. The truth was Ash could see us anywhere, and the five square miles of Cedar Hills suddenly seemed so damn small. What if she and Mike were at the cliffs? Or walking through the park for that matter? My palms were damp by the time Jake arrived. I slid into the front seat. He laughed.
âYou look like Kim Possible,â he said.
âBlast from the past,â I said, tightening my ponytail. âI guess I was going for inconspicuous, and I donât have camouflage.â
âWe are heading to a public place, people might be around,â Jake said.
âSo, if someone happened to see us together, and, say, it got back to Courtney, it would all be okay?â
âYeah, why, are you worried about Buzz?â
âNo,â I said, but that was only because I knew that he was at an away soccer game. Weâd hung out only a few times outside of school since the laundry room incident, and always with Ash and Mike. We texted a bit, but not that much. Not the way I spoke with Jake. Even though we never put a label on what we were doing, I didnât think heâd like the idea of me being alone with Jake.
âCan I ask you something?â
He nodded, made a turn toward the park.
âWhy me? Why didnât you ask Courtney or Pat Boyle to come with you?â
He didnât say anything for a few moments, lips pursed in thought, he took a breath and spoke as he drove.
âYou listen, Sarah. You donât try to get me out of a mood or tell me what Iâm feeling is wrong. I can talk to you. I trust you with my stuff.â
He glanced at me.
Whoosh.
I smiled and turned to look out the window, didnât want him to see me flush. His words warmed me. I only hoped I could live up to them.
We parked by the lake, not too far from where weâd been the time we came to see Alexâs memorial bench, then walked toward the entrance of the hiking trails that led to the cliffs. The ground was soft, the air damp and earthy. It was chilly but warmer than normal for late November. The trees were bare, which somehow accentuated the somber mood. The wooded ground, a carpet of browns and faded yellow, except for the path that led to the cliffs.
