18)Pleasure/Passion/Purpose
While in college, my father gently pressured me to become an attorney before coming to work at Darley. I wanted to follow his wishes because I knew it was important to him. I quickly discovered through undergraduate business law classes that I did not have the mind for it, nor did I enjoy it.
My mother died of cancer one month after I arrived at Marquette University for college, and I turned to Father Naus for guidance over the next few years. As we discussed my career path, he gave me a card that said, “You will rarely succeed at anything, unless you truly enjoy doing it.” Thirty years later, I still have that card and think about the impact this small bit of advice has had on my life over the years. I pass this sentiment on to many people who are looking for career advice.
Today, I still migrate to those areas of the business that I truly enjoy and where I do well. I don’t enjoy certain aspects of our business, such as legal, IT and HR issues. But I’ve surrounded myself with people who do and who are extremely good at them
It’s one thing to enjoy what you are doing and quite another to be passionate about it. It’s easy to see those who enjoy their vocation and those who hate their jobs. After retiring from the railroad, Heidi’s uncle, Fred Bon, became a chauffeur to stay active. He came in contact with a lot of business people and can quickly size them up – there is usually no hiding it.
The importance of passion cannot be understated. If two companies are competing in the same market and are viewed as being similar, the one with passion or “fire” always wins! It can be an incredibly powerful differentiator. It can’t be faked.
I pop out of bed like a piece of toast in the morning – I simply can’t wait to get to work, even on weekends. It’s my calling, my life’s work, my legacy.
Everyone in the industry knows that my family and I share this passion, and we’ve even used it in the marketing campaigns that won us a CEBA advertising award. If you’re not passionate about what you do, then your customers and coworkers will see it, and, most importantly, you will be unfulfilled. Find something else that you truly love to do, and you’ll never work another day in your life.
If you’re fortunate to find a job that aligns with your own core desires or passions, you’re going to be successful at it and everyone involved is going to benefit. Passion is contagious. If you’re excited about your products, company, industry and your customers, the more likely it is that prospects will feed off your passion.
Being in a business that serves warfighters and firefighters, it is very easy for Team Darley employees to feel an innate sense of purpose and passion. Nearly any business can find altruistic meaning; we’re fortunate that ours comes so easily and naturally. In some companies, the purpose can simply be about creating good paying jobs for its employees.
