Twelve: Mercy

"Don’t like that," I said, looking over at the forty-foot drop to the platform. "It's got boss vibes."

"You say the dumbest shit," Gretchen said. "It's like a mix of country bumpkin and gutter slang."

"You can't change the poor," Alecia said, putting her hand to her chest. "It's futile to try."

"Quiet. We don’t know if we are alone." Jackson held up his hand, scanning for movement. Other than the water flowing down the walls, everything was still as the water rushed past the circular platform, making it look like it was floating.

"I hear nothing but the flow of shit," Thragdor said, putting a protective arm in front of Alecia, who looked unsure if she was offended or not.

"Precisely," Jackson said.

I sighed. "I'll take a look, you babies. Out of the way." I jumped, spanning the gap and landing on the floating platform. It was solid as a rock as I landed softly, my cloak twirling behind me.

Back in the sewer pipe, Winter looked like she wanted to vomit, her eyes glued to the sword. I could tell she knew something but wasn’t saying, narrowing my eyes.

Ae pushed Winter from behind, and she fell with a yip. The demon landed hard next to me on the platform with a loud slap as her forehead hit the stone ground. I grabbed her by the crook of the elbow as she tried to scramble back.

"You're in it for the long haul," I hissed to Winter, catching Ae in her blade form out of the air. "Now, tell me what the sword is."

"I don’t know," Winter said, briefly dropping the cutesy façade. "I have no desire to die in this miserable pit. Let me go."

"Then we both go look at it together," I said, pulling her forward.

I stared into the demon's eyes as she flipped through facial expressions like turning pages in a book. I caught a glimpse of yun in her eyes as I wondered if she was going to attack me. I realized that there was a significant amount of yun in the chamber, and it appeared to be coming from the portal.

"Fine," Winter said with force casualness. "You don’t have to drag me."

I moved slowly across the floor, crouching low, pulling Winter with one hand and holding Ae at the ready with the other. We inched across the platform, which was rounded and incredibly intricate, adorned with mosaic art swirling toward the portal at the center. I stared at the sword, daring it to move.

I sent out an Inspect aimed at the sword.

"Fuck!" I immediately dropped to my knees, completely blinded. It reminded me of the time I tried to inspect Gwap and about lost an eye.

Winter tried to bolt, but I held on with an iron grip as I blinked away spots. Still, the chain didn't move. All that existed was the steady plop of a city’s worth of shit and water cascading down from the sides into the water around us, sounding like hail in a lake.

The other tentatively hopped down, seeming satisfied that I hadn't been gobbled up yet.
