What is Twitter?
Twitter is an online microblogging platform that allows participants to send brief, 140-character messages to a group of people who choose to âfollowâ them. (As a frame of reference, the previous sentence included 141 characters. Twitter messages, known as tweets, are brief!) Your Twitter name (or handle) begins with an @ symbol. For example, mine is @Keppie_Careers. To find my tweets, go to http://twitter.com/keppie_careers. You donât need to have a Twitter account to view the messages people send on Twitter, but you will need an account to respond or interact.
Your tweets are displayed on your profile page, on the home page of each person who follows you, and in the Twitter public timeline (tweets are saved and indexed by the Library of Congress). Using Twitter is the equivalent of participating in an open chat room or texting many people at once.
You can send your messages using the website directly, through a number of applications that help you manage your time on Twitter, and from any number of mobile applications (see the Resources section for suggestions).
There is no doubt that you will find people on Twitter sharing trivial information that will not interest you, but many people consider Twitter a platform to demonstrate their expertise and find out what is going on in the world. Some have referred to Twitter as âan entrée to real-time relationship building,â âbetter than e-mail and phone calls combined,â and the âbest way to share and discover whatâs happening right now.â
TIP
New Twitterers ask:
What will I say? Who will follow me?
Wise Twitterers ask:
What can I learn? What cool people will I find?
