14. Dribbling as the Last Player

If I was asked to pick the dumbest move while playing indoor soccer, then it would have to be dribbling on your own half. Doing this is nothing less than idiotic.

Dribbling on your own half when playing indoor soccer belongs up there with walking on thin ice and hoping you won't fall in, yet you decide to do it anyway.

If you decide to dribble, then it's just a matter of time before you lose the ball, and you will lose it, and you know you'll lose it, but you do it anyway. Giving your opponent an open road at your goal is not what you might call a very popular move.

Believe me, I know, I was forced to learn this the hard way. To make matters worse, it happened during a district cup final where the first prize was $2,000 (a lot back then for a local competition).

My team was playing against another team from the same town, and the game was at 0-0 until about 1:45. I remember it well.

The coach placed me as the last man on the side and we were playing in a 1-2-1 formation.

After the opponents had failed with yet another attack, our keeper passed the ball to me. Now I don’t know why, but as I was approached an opponent I decided to try and dribble past him.

He easily intercepted my dribbling attempt and soon got the ball in his possession. Just seconds later he had scored. It was 1-0 to the opponents.

For a moment I just stood there, wondering why I had just done what I did. And if looks could kill, well, my teammates where trying to kill me with their glares of disbelief.

The game ended at 1-0 and we lost the final. Because of this we also missed our chance to book a trip that we had hoped to go on with the help of the prize money. That trip was to see UEFA Champions League live. It was really heartbreaking.

I remember how I could not sleep for several days afterward because of this unnecessary defeat, one that was caused by my moment of madness.

After everyone had gotten over the beating, besides me that is, my teammates said it was not my fault and that it was a simple mistake that could have happened to any of us. Their words didn't make me feel any better though.

I can still feel the disappointment of that day when I look back on it, like I am doing now as I write this book. I was a seasoned player yet I made such a rookie mistake in such an important competition, that's why it haunted me for all those years.

The positive thing to come out of this blunder was that I never ever dribbled again as the last man when playing indoor soccer. I don't think I could repeat it again any more than I could consciously put my hand on top of a hot stove.

After that day, whenever
