In today’s society, many people have become crazed germaphobes. We use antibacterial soap and slather on hand sanitizers. Ironically, these products only make harmful bacteria stronger and our resistance to them weaker. But guess what? Our bodies need bacteria to work. The good bacteria (or microflora) that naturally occur in our digestive tracts are essential to our digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune response. Our good-bacteria population can easily become depleted by culprits such as alcohol, antibiotics, artificial sweeteners, illness, over-the-counter medications, poor diet, stress, and travel. When our flora is depleted, digestion is compromised, potentially creating allergies and illness.
Since we spent Week 1 cleaning up our diets and beginning to flush out our digestive tracts, our intestines are primed and ready to be repopulated with friendly bacteria.
