Mr. O’Shandly was a little less than eighteen inches tall and was dressed in a rather tattered brown coat and jacket. He had a tam o’shanter (a kind of Irish beret) as his hat and, and on his feet he wore very worn, black scuffed boots. He had reddish brown hair and had a beard of the same color. Mr. O’Shandly’s eyes were the merriest shade of green that Susan had ever seen, and, as he looked around or blinked, they sparkled like two great emeralds. Susan remembered her manners quite suddenly and introduced herself, and told him all about the family’s trip to America and the apple farm. When she explained that her family was from Ireland, the little man laughed so hard his eyes watered and he had to blow his nose.

“Of course you are, me Lass. I knew ye was an native of the shamrock as soon as I saw ye.” He spoke very eloquently and was exceedingly polite. “That is why my eyes are green. Ireland is known as the “emerald isle” to all your kith and kin. I am a son of the heath myself, Lass, newly arrived from the old country. Before ye ask, me lady, let me tell you. I am a leprechaun, the third son of a third son.”

Of course, Susan had, for as long as she could remember, heard all about leprechauns from her Mama and Papa. Her brothers used to tell her tall tales about trying to catch them to capture their pots of gold. Mama said, however, that not all the leprechauns had crocks of gold. Some of them were cobblers, some tailors, and some of them tended wide gardens of shamrocks all over the old county.

Curiosity made Susan ask Mr. O’Shandly how he came to be in America and how he had ended up in their house on the apple farm. Well, it was quite a story. It seemed that Mr. O’Shandly loved the smell of Mama’s cooking. He loved the taste of her cooking even more. When the family had still been living in County Kerry, he’d sneak into the house all the time to help himself to some leftovers.

Well, one night, one of her brothers nearly caught him when he was feasting on some of Mama’s stew and biscuits. So he had hidden among the afghans in Mama’s old trunk which stood in the corner near the fire hearth. He’d fallen asleep, and the next thing he knew someone had tied cord around the trunk and he was traveling wherever the family was going.

By the time he’d found the crack in the chest’s side panel and squeezed himself though it, they were all on the boat, sailing to America. Well, since he couldn’t go back, he decided to make the best of his situation and stay with the family. The rest of his story was about how he spent his time hunting for food on the ship and hiding back in the trunk on the way to the apple farm.
