Chapter 19
Brock woke up around four and couldnât go back to sleep. Tomorrow was Christmas Eve. Heâd tried to be patient, looking for ways to be with Ava and taking deep breaths every time his planning hit a dead end. He wanted to spend quality time with her, and he wanted to be with her on Christmas. With the days slipping by, it looked like he really wouldnât get to see her at all. Not until ... well, he didnât know when. And like Rylee had said, he had some pent-up feelings about it.
At six he finally got up, going out with Abbie to spread salt on the icy walk. That took eight minutes. With nothing else to do, he strapped on his skis, whistled for the dog, and took off. It would only take an hour or two to make it around the lake, and he couldnât think of a better way to burn through some stress.
He strapped a headlamp on and took off. It would be a while still before the sunrise, but the snow gave a glow all of its own. Push, kick, glide. Push, kick, glide. The rhythm of movement and focusing on what the lantern light ahead helped him sort through his thoughts.
If Ava were with him, theyâd be doing all the Christmas things together. Sledding, decorating the tree, playing games. Mom had her homemade advent calendar ready with its miniature ornaments, and heâd shopped for small presents to go with each day. Heâd been saving them up, thinking sheâd eventually be with him and heâd send her on a treasure hunt to find them all. Now what? Would he just mail them to her? The idea depressed him even more.
This just couldnât be how their relationship would be from now on. What could he do? When heâd taken the peninsula job, heâd committed to five years. He could try to break thatânot the best for his career reputationâand move back to Anchorage. That would work until Kelly decided to make another move. He couldnât make a career shift every time she did.
And then there was his mom. Heâd been relieved when Kelly had first decided to move to Seattle last year. Mom was still sharp and active, but she wasnât getting any younger. Sheâd been on her own for three years now. He knew she missed him and Ava, and they missed her. If he went back to Anchorage, would Mom consider going with him?
Passing the quiet houses on the newer end of the lake, Brock considered the future of Lake Thelma. His mom would never voluntarily move away from there. Plus, she wouldnât trust anyone else to take care of the house that had been hers for over thirty years. A new owner might tear it down, build several sleek new homes in its place. That would break Momâs heart.
Ryleeâs question played at the corners of his mind. Imagine the perfect reality. What would he do if he could choose how everything played
