Chapter 6

“You’re not singing,” Grace whispered as everyone around us belted out the chorus to We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

“Am too,” I argued, even though I totally wasn’t.

“No. You’re just moving your mouth.”

“I don’t sing.”

“You do every day in the shower.”

“I can make you sing in the shower tonight.” I smiled as I watched Grace’s face turn red from embarrassment as if anyone could have heard my whispers.

She gave me a stern look as she elbowed me in the side. “Just sing.”

I winked at her and went back to moving my mouth, which is what I continued to do at all of the houses we came to. Once we were done, Beatrice invited everyone over to the cottage for hot chocolate and cookies. Delaney and Dylan ran around with the other kids while we learned more about the town. It had a population of just one thousand people which meant pretty much everyone knew each other. While Beatrice and Arthur didn’t get many outside visitors to their cottage anymore, it seemed they hosted people from town all the time, especially around Christmas. They did special events where kids made decorations for the Christmas tree and baked Christmas cookies. They also had a big Christmas Eve party where they put up a large enclosed tent in order to fit everyone.

As the night was starting to wind down, Delaney and Dylan came running over with their new friends following closely behind them. “Moms! Can we please go sledding tomorrow? Everyone is going to be there,” Delaney begged, while Dylan pushed out his bottom lip.

I looked at Grace, who shrugged her shoulders, then out the window where the snow was still falling down. “Alright. Let’s do it.”

Delaney turned to Dylan and they high-fived each other before high-fiving their new friends as well.

“If we’re going to be sledding tomorrow though, you two need to get to bed so you’re not too tired.”

“And you have to make mom sing in the shower.”

I spit out my hot chocolate in response to Delaney’s words. “What?”

“When we were caroling, you told mom you were going to make her sing in the shower tonight.” Delaney shrugged, thankfully completely oblivious to what that actually meant. “I guess you didn’t get enough singing tonight.”

Grace glared at me as I started to laugh, along with the other grown ups in the room. I was still laughing an hour later when we got up to our bedroom.

“This isn’t funny,” Grace lectured. “We’re not teenagers.”

“We’re also not dead. Everyone has sex.”

“Except you tonight.” She put her arms across her chest and lifted an eyebrow, but couldn’t stop her lips from slightly curving into a smile.

“Is that so?” I asked as I used one hand to push her down onto the bed. “Your heart rate right now tells me otherwise.” I ran my hand slowly across her chest while I kissed along her neck.

Despite her best efforts, Grace let out a soft moan when I nipped at the part of her neck that I knew was extra sensitive.
