Chapter Five

Anson

The minute Sidney opened the door, the only thing I wanted to do was take her in my arms and call off the date. Just sitting next to her in the car has me on edge. I’ve never wanted anyone as much as I want her, and it’s hard to resist pulling over and claiming her like she deserves. Maybe that’ll show her that she belongs here with me in Emerald Village, and not back in the city.

We pull off the main road and down the little dirt path that leads to the scene of our date. I wasn’t sure if she’d go for this, but I figured if she’s totally opposed we can always find something else to do. Something tells me she’s going to love it.

“You really are taking me into the woods to kill me, aren’t you?”

“Nothing gets past you, Sid.”

“Aw, no one’s called me that since I left the city.”

The trees on the sides of the road thicken as we drive deeper through the outskirts of town. “You miss the city?”

“Desperately,” she says without hesitation. My headlights illuminate only what’s directly in front of us. As if sensing the tension between us, she turns to me. “But I’m enjoying my time here.”

“It’s not too podunk for you?”

“Oh Lord, Anson. If you have something to say, say it.”

I can’t help but laugh at her bluntness. “You are curt.”

“I’m direct, that’s all. I won’t apologize for it.”

“I’d never ask you to.” A beat of silence passes between us. Banter with Sidney is so different from with any other woman I’ve ever been around. “I like how you communicate. Some women are so coy, so passive.”

Sidney raises her finger in the air. “Not it.”

“No shit.” This makes her laugh. The sweet echo of her giggle makes me feel like I just won the lottery, and she’s the grand prize. “I guess what I’m trying to say is that the city isn’t everything. There’s a lot of great things about living outside of one.”

“I know that.” Her voice softens. “I like it here, okay? I’ll admit that it’s nice not having to put on an imaginary suit of armor just to go to the grocery store. Or wear headphones as I walk around to drown out the sound of sirens and car horns coming at me from all sides. Here it’s—“

“Peaceful.” I interrupt.

Sidney brushes her long hair over her shoulder and nods. “Exactly, and everyone’s so nice. Well,” she throws me the side-eye. “Almost everyone.” A smile plays at the corners of her lips.

“Guilty,” I say, not sure if I want an answer to my next question. “How long are you in town for?”

“Six weeks. That should be enough time to get the store up and running, train the employees, and make sure we haven’t hit any rough spots. But I can stay longer if I need to. If I’m being honest, I didn’t actually want to come in the first place.”

“I can understand that. Change can be scary.
