Chapter 4

Bad enough she shot a guy, but a shot in the gut, where he’d die in slow agony. At least the video would show self-defense. Should. Still, they’d lost their hideout because a woman who could barely walk had to go out for breakfast. Wake someone at least, get a walking partner. He knew years before, she was too tough for her own good.

They got back to the hotel and Russ took up the pizzas while Vern grabbed two suitcases from the trunk. They’d grab the other suitcase and the clothes after they ate.

Russ walked into the room first, turned with index finger to his mouth.

Deria slept.

Vern opened one pizza box, stuck a couple slices on it, opened a suitcase and grabbed a fifth of bourbon. Russ took another plate, a couple of slices, and a fifth of scotch.

Russ sprinkled hot peppers on his slices as Vern took a couple of bites. They both drank. If Vern cared he’d have told Russ to watch out, he might get peppers in his scotch and they’d go a lot better with bourbon. Caring about other people’s mistakes when they didn’t endanger him wasn’t a thing Vern did.

They were on their second slices by the time Deria stirred.

“Good nap?” Vern got her the other fifth of bourbon and a couple slices.

They were in her mouth too fast for an answer. He didn’t want one anyway. He wanted the same thing she did: Brass Wrensky dead. How they pulled that off, he didn’t know. If they figured it out after lunch, the day was a success.
