Chapter 17
Travis watched as Megan and her Mom exited the dining hall. His heart was confused, and his brain wasnât helping. He had listened to the conversation at the other table. He really wanted to believe that Megan cared enough about him to plead his case to the captain. From the first time he looked through the Civic window into those angry blue eyes, his heart had experienced an unaccustomed feeling. The vision of her delicate face staring at him out of the car window had burned itself into his brain. The second time, he had felt bad about cutting in line in front of her, but he couldnât miss his flight, and the opportunity had presented itself. He didnât have much hope of seeing her again. She reminded him of an Indian maiden. Not the quiet, timid ones pictured in paintings, but one with fire and courage. He liked playing with fire. He had enjoyed watching her get angry. It had made her even more beautiful if that were possible.
Back at the airport he had been hot on Redâs trail and had come up with an idea that he felt certain would work. Red, as John was called, might get suspicious and think Travis was following him, but a sexy young woman doing the following would be welcomed. Miss West fell right into the part. It had been a pure piece of luck to have her find seats behind him and right across from Red. Travis had come up with his plan when Megan and the curator had engaged in conversation about visiting him in the Bahamas. The problem had been how to keep up with the girl so that she could, unknown to her, keep him informed about Red. The long plane ride had given him time to figure out a plan. If he got off first, he could grab her suitcase instead of his.
That idea worked. But then he found the carved figure tucked into her luggage. It looked rudimentary and old. It was not something a young woman would have ordinarily packed to take with her on vacation. He had taken a picture of it with his phone and sent it to his boss. He hadnât heard whether it was valuable artwork or just a personal item, but it put a lot of doubts in his mind about his mysterious young lady. He took a chance by not putting the artifact back in her suitcase. She would certainly know he had taken it if it were missing when she got the luggage back. Under the circumstances, it seemed a lot more likely that she knew more than she was saying about that statue. Unlessâ¦.
Travis made up his mind. âIf you will excuse me, I think I will turn in for the evening.â Travis left the other guests at the table discussing what they had overheard from the table behind them. I think it will be a good evening to do a little reading. If I can
