SMOOTH FINISH

CD player on a large flat rock near the blanket, he then flipped a CD

into the player and hit the play button.

He straightened back up and turned to face her. The soft strains of a love song filled the quiet night. “Dance?”

The ground beneath her feet was soft sand with a few tiny pebbles that shifted beneath her as she walked to him. “Well, I guess you did promise to take me dancing.”

His body heat surrounded her as he took her into his arms and they drifted over the soft ground to the cadence of the romantic instrumental.

“Now this is what I call a little bit of heaven,” he said as he rocked against her.

“It is,” she agreed. “So, do you own this land? Is that what you were trying to tell me?”

“Uhmm-hmmm. I closed the deal last month.” He turned and pointed back up to the top of the hill they had just traversed. “I’m going to build up there.”

“I’m glad you’re going to realize your dream.”

He turned back to her and cupped her face. “That was only part of it. I never thought I’d have a chance at the rest of it.”

She was afraid to ask about the rest. Afraid to find out if it mirrored her own.

“Do you want to know the rest, Cody?”

“I’m afraid to hear it,” she whispered.

He tilted her chin upward. “Don’t be. I hope it’s something you’ll want as well. It’s you, Cody. You’re part of that dream—the most important part. I thought when you started dating Evans, I’d never get a chance.”

“I didn’t love him,” she protested. “We sort of fell into dating each other after high school, but it was never anything serious.”

“He doesn’t want to let you go.”
