Chapter 1

Planning a New Future

Olivia followed the waiter to a small table at the back of the restaurant. Looking out the window, she wondered how her life had gotten so far from where she started. It had been four years since she had been back to her home city, but it no longer felt comfortable. It didn’t feel remotely like home anymore. Of course, her trip had been on short notice, and when she reached out to her friends, hoping to get a chance to meet up with them, none of them had time to see her. Kids, aging parents, work, and life were keeping them too busy for a last-minute meetup. She was only in town for three nights, during the week. Unable to extend her stay to the weekend, she finally accepted that she would have to occupy herself during this visit.

Even if she wanted to go out, Olivia had avoided going out alone to dance, especially after the events of that night a few years earlier. She ordered a small glass of red wine and a light meal, then began looking out the window. At thirty-three years old, she knew that she was starting to run out of time to do the things that she had always planned to do. The last couple of years had been stressful and unsatisfying, at least on a personal level. Sure, she was now an executive at a large company, and she was making a lot more money than she had ever expected. However, none of that translated into a feeling of success or happiness. She didn’t love her job—in fact, most days she could barely stand it, but at the same time, she didn’t feel that she could just leave. Drumming her fingers on the table, she considered her life and what she really wanted. She knew for certain that she wasn’t happy with the current direction.

A melodic, cheerful laugh roused her from her thoughts, and Olivia began to look around the restaurant. Sitting over at the bar with another woman was a man who looked vaguely familiar. Without realizing it, she stared at him as her mind tried to process where he fit into her memories. The guy was clearly flirting with the young woman, who was touching his arm. He flexed for her, but when he looked up, his eyes met Olivia’s. His face changed a little, then he beamed at her. Tipping his head a little, he touched his forehead, then resumed giving all of his attention to the young woman.

Olivia drew her lips together, biting at the inside of her cheeks as she tried to place where she had met him. Not wanting to continue to stare, she turned her attention back to the window and looked out. After a few unfruitful minutes of consideration, she decided that it didn’t really matter. He could be a boyfriend from high school, or one of the guys who’d laughed about her interests when she was younger. Whoever he was, he wasn’t part of her life now, so it was hardly worth thinking about it.
