Chapter 6

A Matter of Necessity

The next few weeks seemed to fly by, and Lorelei was grateful for the chaos that the Sextons brought whenever they stopped by to visit. It seemed like people were always coming and going, and the place was so lively that nearly a month later she had come to really appreciate the evenings when it was just her and Victor. Lorelei also got a chance to see exactly what Devan had meant about Victor’s role in the family. She had watched many family interactions over the years, but it was very different to see how they behaved when they were talking more seriously. A couple of times, discussions got heated, and it was always Victor who brought the tone back to something more normal. He didn’t really pick sides. Instead, he seemed to thread the discussion in a way that ensured that the others were able to get a better perspective of what the other brothers were saying. What really surprised her was that he was actually the most levelheaded of the group. She had always thought that he was laid-back, but seeing him day in and day out, Lorelei had realized that Victor seemed to be constantly prepared to keep things calm.

One evening she hadn’t even been aware that Cooper, Gabriel, and Archer had come over until she heard their raised voices. Looking up from her computer in the office, she blinked a few times. “I didn’t realize you had visitors.”

Victor was already on his way to the door. “Yeah, they were checking on something that Elliot had left behind. Excuse me.”

Less than a minute passed before the voices were noticeably lower. Standing up, Lorelei headed out of the office and down the hall. It was almost too quiet as she went searching for the men who had until recently been so loud—it had sounded like the brothers were getting ready to come to blows. Walking through the house, she hoped to find Victor on his way back to see if there was anything she could do to help. The young woman had gotten in the habit of making snacks and drinks for the other Sextons when they stopped by, and she didn’t want to neglect what she had come to think of as her duties. It had been such a quiet day as Victor had pretty much kept his nose buried in whatever work he was doing. Not that she had learned anything about his career. She had started working part time from the cozy office because she wasn’t sure what else to do with her time. It felt so comfortable working so close to Victor, and she quickly noticed that he would sit without moving for hours, barely moving anything apart from his fingers. Within that first week, she had made it her priority to ensure he ate and moved around at least once an hour. In just a few weeks, she had adapted so easily that it felt far more like home than her house ever had.
