Her fingers found the edge of the box and she grabbed onto it, tugging it toward her. Overstuffed with years’ worth of accumulated wrapping supplies, half of it too wrinkled and mashed to be of any use, the bin caught on the underside of the bed frame and stuck there. When Hannah pulled harder, her grip slipped and she felt the tearing of fingernails already trimmed utilitarian short. “Ow!”

“What?”

“Nothing,” she said irritably. “Just tore a nail.”

She stuck the ravaged fingers in her mouth for a second, then pulled them out and examined the damage. The index fingernail was ragged. On the longer second finger, a corner of the nail bed had been ripped away and a bright red glistening was already pooling at the cuticle. Even as she studied it, trying to remember if she had any Band-Aids in the house, a drop of blood fell and spread like a tiny chrysanthemum on what she knew for a fact was her only clean blouse, a silk one she kept on hand for those occasions when she knew she was going to be standing next to Cal’s wife.
