Chapter 12

ETHAN SAT IN front of his empty locker, wondering how he was going to swing his last year of college working only part-time while living out of his car, but his main concern was Lisa. No way in hell he would put her in the foster care system, but being homeless wasn’t going to cut it either. Child Protective Services took a dim view of such an unsettled state of affairs. Maybe it was time to put his education on the back burner and get a real job, at least until his financial situation improved.

“Ethan! Hey, Ethan,” Coach’s booming voice echoed in the locker room. “Hoped I’d find you before you cleared out. Got a letter here for ya.”

Ethan ran his fingers along the edge of the envelope near the return address.

“Man, it’s from the USGA. What’d I do now?”

“Good thing that pessimistic attitude of yours didn’t carry over into your golf game because, if it had, USGA wouldn’t have a clue who you are.”

Ethan read the letter twice, not believing his eyes the first time. “There’s gotta be a mistake. Says I’ve got a tee time at the local Open qualifier.”

“I can assure you, that’s no mistake. Make sure you give that sister of yours a great big hug.”

“But why…I mean, how? She doesn’t have the resources or knowledge to get me into the Open.”

“Don’t sell that little gal short. She’s one smart cookie, all right. And when it comes to blood, there’s no greater love.”

In a trance, Ethan walked across campus toward the parking lot. Lisa honked the horn as he passed by in front of their car.

“Hey, where you going?” she yelled out the window on the passenger’s side.

Without a word, he opened the door, slipped onto the driver’s seat, and stared straight ahead.

“Hello? Anyone home?” she asked while waving a hand in front of his eyes.

He tossed the opened envelope onto her lap. “Where’d you get the money?”

Lisa scanned the acceptance letter and smiled. “Does it matter? You’re in.”

Ethan strangled the steering wheel in a death grip. “It certainly does matter when you’re flat broke. I’m almost afraid to ask. Did you do something illegal to get the money?”

“Sort of.”

“Goddamn it, Lisa. I can see our little talk about making smart decisions went straight over your head. Come on now, out with it. What did you do? And for God’s sake, if you sold your body, please lie to me.”

“I sold the ring at a pawn shop.”

“What ring?” He thought for a moment. “Gram’s? You sold Grandma’s antique diamond ring? I’d forgotten all about that after we hid it from Mom. She darn near tore the place apart one night hunting for that thing. I don’t know, it’s a nice gesture and all, but there’s no use in wasting it on me. I can still cancel the tourney, get a refund of the entry fee, and then we can buy the ring back.”
