Chapter Twelve

Once back at the Tiki Hut, I went into the storage room and found the camouflage material I’d purchased for the Memorial Day festivities. I didn’t need more than half a yard to do what I needed to. I debated asking Aunt Fern to help, but I kind of wanted to keep my spying venture quiet. She might have felt obligated to tell her brother-in-law what was going on. If Dad learned of my plan, he’d for sure stay away from the forest—unless he really was learning how to shoot a crossbow.

I located a pair of scissors in the bin, along with the material and some thread. I cut off a chunk and then went upstairs to create my masterpiece. Convincing Iggy to do this would be a no-brainer. It would be the highlight of his year.

After I made the additions to his costume, I planned to snag Penny when she got off work to make sure she still could join us.

As soon as I entered the apartment, Iggy jumped down from his stool. “What is that for?”

“Give me a sec, and I’ll tell you.” I went into my room, located his Halloween outfit and carried it out. It was a bit smaller than I remembered.

“Aren’t we a little early for Halloween?” he asked.

“It’s for a mission that I’m going on tonight—an undercover mission where you will be the star.”

Iggy bounced up and down and then did two circles before stopping. “Tell me everything.”

I outlined my plan of driving to the park and then walking in on foot. “I don’t imagine Hunter and his class will venture too far into the woods. With your excellent hearing, you can guide us.”

“I’m in, but what is with the extra material?”

“This outfit needs to cover your tail and legs. I have green face paint to complete the disguise.”

“Yippee. I’m going to tell Aimee.”

“No!”

He stopped in his tracks. “Why not?”

“I’m not sure what we will find, and I’d rather not have Aunt Fern know just yet. Tomorrow will be soon enough. Besides, you’ll be able to tell Aimee how you saved the day.”

I was telling him what he wanted to hear, because I needed Iggy to go along with everything.

“That’s dope.”

“What?”

“I heard someone say it. It means it’s really cool.”

Now I felt old. “How did it go with Aimee today?”

“We’re cool. For now. I don’t really trust her.”

I chuckled. “Relationships are hard. Be honest with her, and she’ll come around.”

“At the moment, she’s good.”

I smiled. “I’m happy to hear it.”

It took about an hour to measure, cut, and hand sew his outfit. Once I finished, I had to say, it was dope. The edges weren’t finished off, but Iggy wasn’t on this mission to look good. My goal was to make sure the material covered all of him—including his tail. I doubt the bow at the top to keep the material in place was comfortable, but he might be too excited to notice. With the addition of some makeup, no one would see him in the forest.
