Chapter Thirty-One

Kat

The day at work sped by as thoughts of Jax filled my consciousness. When I first met him, I never thought I’d be in a relationship with him, but now I can’t picture my future without him.

After leaving my day job, I headed over to the bakery and have less than an hour until I can see them. I love working for Chloe, but her cupcakes are a different story. Dieting and baked goods don’t go hand in hand. At least not in my hand.

Two women that I’ve previously seen at the bakery step to the counter with kids in tow. “Welcome to Chloe’s Bakery. What can I get you?”

“Hello.” The dark-haired woman smiles. “My name is Katie Woodson. Chloe is supposed to have a cake ready for my little girl’s second birthday party.”

“Oh.” My eyebrows raise. “You must be here for the fairy cake. It’s adorable.”

“Did you hear that?” Katie kisses the head of the dark-haired little girl perched on her hip.

The other woman, the one with pink hair, smiles at her. “Did you hear that, Abby? Your birthday cake is ready.”

“Yay!” The little girl’s eyes light up, and she claps her hands. Even though she’s barely old enough to talk, she clearly understands she’s the belle of the ball.

“Let me get Chloe.” After I get to the door of the kitchen, I open it and wave to Chloe. “A Katie Woodson is here to pick up her cake.”

“Oh, good.” Chloe smiles from ear to ear. “I’ve got something to run past her. Give me a second, and I’ll be out front.” She cocks her head to the side. “Is it busy?”

“No. It’s Katie and the woman she is with and their kids.”

“What color of hair does the woman with her have?”

“Pink.”

“Perfect. That’s her sister-in-law, Rissa.” Chloe grabs the cake box and walks toward me. “Since we’re slow, this is a perfect opportunity to run a business idea past them.”

“Oh, okay.” I hold the door open. “Do you need me to do something else while you’re discussing it?” I only work part-time at Chloe’s, so I don’t want to overstep my boundaries by listening in on her personal conversations–especially if they include business and finances.

“No. No. I want your opinion also.” She breezes past me, calls out to the women, and sets the package on the counter. “I can’t wait until you see this masterpiece. It’s my best work yet.” She opens the lid and clasps her hands behind her back.

“Let me see.” Katie rushes forward, and her mouth drops open. “Oh, my God, Chloe, it’s phenomenal. Thank you so much.” The little girl’s hand pokes out toward the cake, and Katie grabs it before any damage is done.

Rissa peeks inside. “That’s fabulous. Everyone is going to love it.”

“Thank you.” She beams and closes the lid. “Ladies, I need your opinion on something. I’ve been propositioned for a business idea that I think is killer, but I might be too close to the project to be objective.”

“Okay. We’re all ears.
