TAUNTING A KILLER

MARCY

When I got to the station the next morning, which would normally be my day off, Captain Robinson had me open up my email. There was another message from the killer. I hadn’t bothered to look at it the night before, not wanting to deal with the guy after having to deal with Nicholas and then trying to keep Stephen sober and Mike from sitting too close to me on the sofa.

Now, though, was a different story. I braced myself for what I was about to read.

My dearest Marcy,

I have been thinking a great deal about you. You witnessed your mother’s death, and I wonder how that made you feel? Do you think it played a part in why you are so successful at killing? Or do you think you were born to it as I was? I’ve thought quite a bit about that over the years as I’ve followed your career. It surprised me when you chose law enforcement, but then perhaps it was a smart choice for a woman like you. You can hide in plain sight, can’t you? I’ve also wondered if your mother’s murder made you into the killer you are today or if you were always meant to be a killer.

For me, I believe I was born for it. I was created to kill these whores; it is my passion in life. I enjoy it immensely, watching the life leave their eyes… it is powerful, don’t you think? Holding someone’s life in your hands. There is no greater joy for me. Is it the same for you?

I have been thinking about how I can improve my kills, draw out the experience. I really want to give these whores more of what they deserve. A truly torturous death… I want to bask in the glory of my kill for longer.

Do you ever think of giving your victims a more torturous death? Like the last guy? The pervert who attacked children… he deserved a more excruciating death than a bullet to the head, don’t you think?

Perhaps next time you can do that. I am sure it will bring you great joy to make them suffer. We are two peas in a pod, you and I. I look forward to the day we meet face-to-face, and you know it’s me.

For now, I must go. I have to prepare for my next move in our game.

Ever yours,

FF

I was appalled. How dare he compare me to him. How dare he think that I enjoyed taking someone’s life. I only acted when I had to in order to save myself or someone else. There was no joy in it.

“He seems to think he’s got a real connection with you, Kendrick.”

I nodded, unable to speak because if I did, I’d probably say some very inappropriate words that shouldn’t be said in the workplace.

“You’d better write him back, get him talking some more. Maybe he’ll let something slip if you play along.”

“Sir, I’m not going to tell this psychopath that I’m like him—I’m not!”

“No, of course not, that wasn’t what I meant.
