CHAPTER XV

AMETHYST

M y precious, warm cover was yanked off, and Mr. Sweet-Face jumped on top my chest with a startled wail. Then he promptly fell back asleep, curving himself over my boobs, and I rolled my eyes heaven-ward, pushing him off my chest to glare at the intruder who’d interrupted my sleep.

Adele was smiling down at me, looking more excited than I’d ever seen her.

She’d spent about three hours last night apologizing to me about running off, and then she went on to apologize about calling Victor and Elijah over.

I’d said it was okay, because I didn’t really care much, but I still think she felt guilty for it.

She really was a good person. It made me sad thinking of how she must’ve lived, that every time I paid her a compliment or had a normal conversation with her, she grew uncomfortable, seeing herself unworthy.

She felt like the sister I never got to grow up with.

Matthias and I had walked to my room yesterday, and he’d been silent for most of it, until I forced him to talk by asking questions he couldn’t just shrug off. He was too kind.

When I asked how he felt, he’d only said “Apologetic. Ashamed of myself for losing control. I’m sorry, little one. I could’ve hurt you, and I would never want that.”

“I know,” I’d replied back, and no matter how much I tried to tell him it was fine, that it really was, he hadn’t seemed to believe me.

Emilia had told me a lot about the way things were here, and though it took me a while to wrap my head around it, the way I grew up didn’t make it impossible.

There were things in this society called Castes, apparently, and they indicated the power a person held. That power didn’t have to be social status or physical, it was an ability—Emilia had called it Gift—that a person was born with or developed. There were the Reds, who were the most powerful, the Blues, or the mediocre, and the Greens, who had minimal power.

Emilia, Elijah, Ambrose, Matthias, and Emris were all some of the most powerful of the Red Caste.

Thank you, history, for being so accurate and letting me know this shit before hand.

Not.

Because I was beginning to think of all the signs back home that were leading me to believe that all of this was true back there, too. I’d just been blind to all of it.

Everyone was.

“We have to get ready for the ball, Ame! Now! It’s almost three in the afternoon.”

I blinked at Adele’s voice interrupting my thoughts. “What?”

“The ball,” she repeated, in a slightly exasperating voice. I couldn’t help but smile a little, because I knew she was growing more comfortable with me. It was only when Emilia was around that she shied away. “I put the dresses back there, see? And since you’d said you didn’t want any help preparing, we need more time.”

“Isn’t the ball at night?” I muttered, closing my eyes again.

“Yes. But we have to get ready before Lord Elijah comes to take us at seven.
