CHAPTER 8

Way #3: Unplug Her

from a Plugged-In World

Rob was a middle-schooler, and Lexi, a bright-green-eyed, freckle-faced, adorable tween. I was so excited to share one of my all-time favorite movies with them. They could finally absorb and handle the plotline and adventure. So here we were sitting in our little family room, and they were engrossed. I took note of my brilliance as a mom, knowing they’d be getting a message about pure and true love as they were entertained.

His Way

“We demolish arguments and

every pretension that sets itself

up against the knowledge of God,

and we take captive every thought

to make it obedient to Christ.”

2 CORINTHIANS 10:5

CORE VALUES: Discernment

and obedience

Just about then, an old geezer in the movie was waddling his way through an underground mine carrying his lantern above his head. Before the word flew out of the character’s mouth, I remembered it was coming. Oh, no! I thought. I’d forgotten about this.

“#*&@!” he said.

“What did he just say?” asked Rob, incredulous that his mom was letting it through her generally cautious filtering system.

“He said, ‘#*&@!’ ” piped Lexi clear as a bell.

“WHAT did you just say?” said Rob again, clearly not grasping that his nine-year-old sister didn’t understand the concept of a rhetorical question.

“#*&@!” She blasted it out again. “Now be quiet, Robby! I’m watching the movie!”

And on we went, without Lexi even realizing that she’d just thrown out her first cuss word. Oh, it wasn’t the Hiroshima bomb of the language, and she hadn’t “woven a tapestry of profanity that’s still hanging over Lake Michigan,” but she’d let a good one fly without even knowing it.
