2. Video games may foster visual–spatial skills. Perhaps you’ve read articles about how boys who play video games tend to have a leg up in critical hand-eye coordination problem-solving careers like engineering or surgery. One reason may be that in the higher-education classroom, these two fields use virtual methods to teach. Another may be that the experience actually builds up the brain to be able to reason more quickly. Either way, this idea of faster problem-solving skills found its way into my son’s line of reasoning when we discussed gaming.

“Think of it like playing chess, Mom,” he said to me, making clear to me that we both held the premise that chess enjoys the approval of the most educated, “but with more people and more places. I have to solve the problem faster than my opponent. It’s a greater level of problem-solving than chess.” And just in case I wasn’t buying his argument, he added, “And I killed it in school.”

In fact, he’s “killing it” in an honors-level engineering program. (Hmm?) Later in our conversation he explained to me “one more time” how the physical vapor deposition system he’s using to vaporize…uh, er…stuff works. Then he excused himself from lunch because he needed to go repair it. (How’s the kid know how to repair something when I can’t even remember its name?)

He had me.
