Chapter 16

Jasmine kept the note on her, hidden in a pocket. She didn’t want to risk anyone else stumbling across it. It was her only concrete piece of evidence, and she wouldn’t risk it disappearing like the body. She must have gone over the twelve words a hundred times during the night, before Luffy finally herded her to bed, forcing her to get some sleep. She couldn’t help but wish the note had been more specific. What did Sophie know about Daiki? How did this source know?

She had a strong feeling that it was Takumi who delivered the note. It made the most sense.

Who else would know that Daiki was afraid of Sophie? But there was a complication with this theory, of course. Takumi and Daiki were thick as thieves. Takumi didn’t know why Daiki was frightened of Sophie. Why wouldn’t Daiki confide in his brother? Unless, of course, he had an idea that his fear would lead to his death, and he was trying to protect Takumi from the same fate?

So, who else besides Takumi? Hannah was the other obvious choice. She knew Jasmine was working with Sophie, and Jasmine asked her questions about how Sophie operated. Hannah hadn’t mentioned Takumi in their conversation, but she knew Sophie better than anyone else in the house. If anyone besides Takumi were to know about any dealings between Sophie and Daiki, it would be Hannah. But there was a problem with this theory as well. Sophie didn’t trust Hannah. Jasmine doubted that she’d ever trusted the other woman beyond the challenges. Hannah only betrayed her by leaving her for Daniel because it was a blow to her ego. If there was something serious going on with Daiki, would Sophie have roped Hannah into it, or given her any useful information?

Jasmine went back and forth on this issue until her head ached. There was no simple answer, and she wouldn’t know until she found more information. Additional information, however, was rare.

However, the young P.I. would soon have another problem to occupy her mind. Jasmine had been up most of the night, even after Luffy forced her to get some sleep, so the knock that came at her door almost didn’t awaken her. It was too early for most people to be awake, let alone knocking, so she opened the door with an ounce of trepidation.

Outside the door stood a man that she recognized as one of the security team members she had seen when she first arrived on the island. His badge proclaimed him as the head of the security team, in fact. He was tall, with a solid build and dark hair.

“Miss Moore,” he said. His tone was polite, but tough. This was a man used to dealing with troublesome people. “My apologies for bothering you this early. There’s a slight matter I must discuss with you before the day begins.”

“All right.”

“May I come in?”

She nodded, opening the door wider and gesturing inside. The room wasn’t a small one, but this man seemed to take up all the space in the room.
