Limits are important. They indicate how far you can go—in eating, playing sports, teasing, or testing the rules at home. In their enthusiasm or their eagerness to get what they want, children often go on too long or take things too far, not knowing where to draw the line. This is something they need to learn from their parents, but limits can be tricky for parents too. Should a child always finish his or her meal, or not? Should you restrict your child’s time playing computer games to an hour a day or let the child play as long as he or she wants? Where do you draw the line? Too much freedom is not good, but nor is an excessively authoritarian approach. It is usually best to find a happy medium, with room for negotiation and for the child to take responsibility for his or her own actions. A mother to her daughter: “I would like you to tidy your room this week. Can you do it before Saturday? Is that a deal?” But the girl would rather do it on Sunday, and that is all right too. So they reach an agreement. Firmness and flexibility combined are effective when it comes to setting limits. And so are learning to recognize when to just let things be and that what you have agreed to already is enough.
