Sexist Attitudes

For some siblings, sexist attitudes became the line in the sand between them. Aisling, a woman from Ireland, shared her regret that she and her brother were not as close as they might be: “My younger brother and I have rarely had confrontations. However, we have a much more distant relationship than I would like. I feel I have lost both of [my brothers, as one died early]. My younger brother doesn’t like it when I talk about women’s rights because he has internalized the attitudes of older role models from the generation above us, which I find extremely challenging.”

Rita, a woman around thirty with four younger siblings, shared, “[The biggest conflicts we face as adults] are differences in perceptions and opinions. Like my brother, who is the middle child and a chauvinist. And that bothers me immensely.” Rita noted that she felt a great deal of pride in being the oldest, and when describing what she wished she could get her siblings to understand, she said that “making them realize that one shouldn’t be judgmental” was her hope. She further lamented, “We live in a very prejudice-driven society, so it’s hard to make them open up their minds and be more loving and accepting.”
