The Favor

Agent Toney Miles drove up his driveway after looking through his rearview mirror, sighting a patrol car circling his neighborhood. For the past few months, Miles grew paranoid for his life and his family’s.

His wife and son called him twice a day. He called them more than that making sure his family was safe. Even though he hasn’t heard from Andrea since the first ordeal, he knew the Italians would come knocking on his door again. Miles only hoped that he didn‘t have to murder anyone for the sake of his family.

Miles pressed the code unlocking the door and entered. It‘s been a long day. The nonstop raids on Kosher Nostra weren’t boosting his morale. The Task Force had emptied over twenty warehouses and arrested over a hundred men; all suspected to be working for Lavie.

His boss, Special Agent David Allen was pushing him to his limit. Tony believed David made this his personal vendetta. He shared little to no information with Tony or Captain Rodgers. There was no way Miles could offer the Italians any information because he had none.

Miles took off his shoes and went to deactivate the second alarm system. It was turned off and Miles knew the deal. He wanted to get this over with and walked to the kitchen where three armed men and Andrea were there waiting. Andrea was enjoying himself a cup of tea as if he was the rightful owner of the house.

“Bonasera, Agent Miles.” Andrea said sipping slowly. Miles pulled a chair across Andrea and took a seat.

“Let’s get straight to the point. What is it now?”

“Ha! straight to the point, Agent?”

The men and Andrea chuckled.

“What do you want?”

“A favor.”

“I know that.”

“A smaller one this time.”

“Just get to the point.”

“I want you to mislead the Task Force‘s investigation.”

“What does that even mean?”

“I want you to stop the raids against Kosher Nostra.”

“Why would I do that?”

“You know why, Agent Miles. Per la tua famiglia”

“How? David is in command.”

“David?”

“Agent David Allen. He doesn’t trust a single soul in our department.”

“I bet.”

“Just tell me what you want me to do.”

“We want you to go after the Triads.”

“David knows the Triads have nothing to do with this.”

“Even after you show him this?” Andrea pushed a folder towards Miles. “Have a look,” he said taking another sip.

Miles opened the file. “Are the Triads trying to take over Alexander‘s territory?”

“No, but that’s what you will present to Agent Allen.”

“He will never fall for it.”

“He‘s too determined to let it any piece of evidence go uncounted.”

Miles knew deep down inside that Andrea was right. These Italians are pressing the right buttons at the right moment. When the raids start becoming pointless, David would go for the bigger fish and work his way down.

“What do you get out of all this?”

“We’ll be free to hire Alexander ourselves.”

“What if I refuse?”

“Maybe you should check out the new set of photos of your wife and son at Disneyland. You already get my drift.”

Miles felt bad. The Italians weren’t bluffing. They were following his family‘s every step.
