Chapter 35

‘So where do you think he went all that time?’ Ulysses asked, as he combed over all the available footage on Heinrich.

‘We know it was the forest,’ Amelia said as she brought up a clear image of Heinrich leaving his property dressed in warm hiking apparel and disappearing into the woods behind his house. She then pulled up another image of Heinrich returning, a little over forty-eight hours later. They studied the images closely.

‘Well, we can tell by the footage he headed south-east,’ Ulysses said.

‘And his satchel is full of something, look,’ Amelia said pointing to Heinrich’s bag, clearly looking bigger than when he had departed.

‘What is it, what would make him just up and leave for a couple of days?’ Ulysses hissed.

‘Let’s look at this logically… how fast can a man walk in an hour… Greymeade?’ Amelia asked. Above them a display read: depending on factors, such as age, height, weight, load carried, the fitness of the individual, and the terrain travelled, the average speed travelled by a human is three point one miles per hour.

‘That’s a start,’ Ulysses said, with a smirk.

‘Don’t be smart… we know he left at five-fifteen and arrived back seven o’clock, just shy of fifty hours away. I think we can both agree that he was gone for the sole purpose of whatever he returned with in his satchel.’

‘Agreed,’ Ulysses nodded.

‘Take away eight hours for sleep over night, six hours of resting up and back, and six hours to do whatever it is, he was doing out there. That leaves twenty hours of travelling. Ten up, and ten back, at three point one miles an hour, travelling south-east would put us where… Greymeade?’ Amelia asked. Grey-cloud forest appeared above their heads, displayed in minute detail, a red pulsing light, south-east from the town.

‘Now you have to remember, this is purely guess work, but under the circumstances, it’s the best solution I can offer. Ulysses nodded.

‘Greymeade, scan Heinrich’s satchel, tell me what you can?’ Ulysses asked. The scan took less than a minute. Alpha particles detected, Greymeade responded.

‘Greymeade, scan the location on the map for Alpha particles?’ Ulysses asked. Again, Greymeade conducted its scan, this time it took nearly ten minutes. Faint traces of Alpha particles detected, 1 mile radius, exact location unknown, Greymeade replied.

‘You were right, anywhere in a mile radius of that location, lies more of what Heinrich wants,’ Ulysses said.

‘When do we go?’ Amelia asked.

‘Tonight. As soon as it gets dark, we leave,’ Ulysses said.
