I wake up with pain bouncing against the inside of my skull. My hand trembles as I run my fingers across the lumps on the side of my head. If I thought Gilly was a nightmare, the proof that it happened lies under my fingertips. The chair is still propped against the door, and I scramble from the bed to remove it. I didn’t want anyone questioning why I locked myself in my room. I get back into the bed; my gaze keeps dragging to the balcony doors. My mind skips and replays Gilly disappearing. I’m out of bed again as I tiptoe toward the door. I pull back the curtains, and the click of the lock opening has my heart lurching in my chest.

I step out onto the empty balcony. Looking over the edge, I can’t understand how he got out safely. I check both sides, but there is no ladder or rope. I don’t think he would leave a rope dangling. He clearly didn’t jump, or I’d be looking at a body below me. A bird screeches in the sky, and I look up. The overhang above me catches my attention, and I push my back against the railing to try to see above me. It’s another balcony.

Shivers race across my flesh. Is that Gilly’s room? Is that how he gets in and out of my room? I’m scrambling back inside when the bedroom door opens.

Lily pauses and frowns. “Good morning.” She tilts her head as she closes the door.

“Good morning,” I respond, and that seems to squash the suspicious look in her eyes.

Lily helps me get dressed. She’s not as chirpy as she normally is. She doesn’t ask me what happened last night. Instead, she focuses on helping me get dressed for brunch with my family and some of Aidan’s.

My gut clenches at the thought of seeing Gilly. “Is there a phone I can use?” I ask Lily. She pauses as she brushes my hair.

“Aidan said I could call my sister,” I explain.

She smiles, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “Yes, Master Murphy told me. He said you can use the phone in his office.”

His office? I would have access to his office. I drop my gaze as Lily finishes brushing my hair. The yellow summer dress is pretty. It’s not a color I’d pick myself. I’m also surprised at the long sleeves and wonder yet again if Aidan knows why I cover my arms.

It doesn’t matter. If my and my mother’s plan works and Aidan kills my father, I could walk away from all this.

With that thought, I get up. I need to make sure Louise is safe.

Lily takes one more look at my face and seems happy with her work when she leads me from the room.

Aidan’s office isn’t what I expected. I pictured a small room, not an actual library. Books and more books line vast shelves. They call to me, though I can’t imagine finding a Jane Austen among the antique reads.

I refocus on the slick black phone for a landline on Aidan’s desk.
