Chapter Three

Why not? Why not indulge? Vare stretched out next to the sleeping woman. He dragged in a breath. Her scent intoxicated him. It was the mix—blood, elixir, semen—a potent combination he denied himself until tonight.

Vare's life stretched before him. He usually tried not to contemplate more than the immediate future: duty, darkness, the disturbing need to hunt and dispatch his own kind, ending their short ugly lives. Clan safety, mundane clan finances, the need to stay hidden in an increasingly transparent world all weighed heavily upon him.

The past few years had not been good ones for the clans. The French destroyed by their own blood crews, Russian clans in poverty nearly as dangerous as being revealed to hunters. The Order of St Albain gained more members than they'd had for a century or more, using modern technology to find the clans and destroy them.

Despite his words, Darlene fell asleep almost immediately and woke in the middle of the night to find him sucking a nipple deep into his mouth, his tongue flicking hungrily.

"I thought we weren't going to do this again,” she said, her voice husky from sleep, eyes heavy.

Vare looked into her eyes and saw a glint of recklessness. He'd lit one thick candle on the dresser and her eyes reflected the candle flame. He rolled her on top of him and she wobbled at the sudden change.

"You're naked. And you smell so sweet.” His tone of voice held a note of complaint. “I just came to check on you, to make sure you were all right."

Darlene wrinkled her nose at him. “I need a shower."

Vare pulled her until her breasts were level with his lips and feasted there. “I'll stop if you want,” he whispered.

"Why would I want you to stop?” Darlene found his nipples and pinched them.

He hissed. “The answer to that is long and complicated."

"Then I don't want to hear it right now.” Darlene licked one of his nipples and he bucked under her, nearly dislodging her from his hips. “And this time I'm going to touch you as much as I want.” She moved her hands down to his smooth, hard erection and circled him.

Fingers slid between her legs and dipped into her moist center.

"You're wet for me.” Vare's voice was breathy. “Rise.” His hands on her hips helped lift her. “Put me inside. It'll help anchor you."

"Uh-huh.” Darlene slid slowly down his length, wondering if he would fit in this position.

Vare fit, pressing deep against her womb. Darlene rode him, slowly. His eyes glittered as he watched her.

"Don't know how you'll bite me like this,” she gasped, feeling herself beginning to go over the edge.

"I have a plan,” Vare gasped.

She came in a glorious hard clenching and found herself flying backwards onto the bed and he was on top, without dislodging his length in the move. Vare rammed deep inside her and his teeth struck into the same place he'd bitten before, and it was even more exquisite than before. Her orgasm continued on and on as he drove into her to completion.
