CHAPTER 30

For the first time since I started, I enjoy coming to school. Rather than sitting in my car, dreading what’s coming and waiting until the last possible moment to go in, now I park and walk straight inside.

I’m being looked at and talked about, and not only because of my leg, although who am I kidding, that’s still part of it. I might still be a weirdo, but me challenging Todd has revealed one thing. A lot of kids don’t like him, or Jack, as well as some of the other guys on the swim team.

I guess it’s what happens when you have a sports team that’s really successful. At most schools it would be the football team, but our football team sucks so they don’t have a lot of swagger. But the swim team has won so much over the years that they’re this school’s equivalent.

It turns out that a couple of juniors are big into MMA, and they know all about Resilient. Some of them even know about Santana and a couple of the other MMA fighters and are asking me if I know her. She’s gotten a lot of media attention because of the arm thing, and because she keeps winning.

When they ask if I know her, I say sure and play it off as no big deal, but it’s kind of cool. Her one-armed choke in the last fight went viral, and a lot of people think it’s ironic that her trademark submission is a choke that involves both arms when she only has one and a half.

Santana told me that visualizing things can be as good as actually practicing them. I thought it was BS, but I looked it up and it turns out it’s a thing.

So that’s what I find myself doing when I walk into swim practice and see that Todd is officially back on the team and standing in the locker room. I put down my bag and stare at him.

In my mind’s eye, the fight is here, now. I close the distance on him with my hands up and my elbows in tight. I throw a couple of quick jabs and as he counters with an overhand right, I level change and double leg him, taking him to the ground and passing his guard before he realizes what’s happened.

Just as I’m starting with the ground and pound, I hear Jack say: “Yo Todd, you think Dylan has like a crush on you, bro? And that’s why he wants to do this?”

A couple of the guys start laughing. Todd’s not one of them.

I stop staring, grab my bag, and go through my swim gear. I guess if you’re going to stare at someone, a locker room filled with a bunch of guys in Speedos might not be the best place to do it.

The team filters out to the pool. A few seconds later Todd walks back in and goes to his locker to retrieve his goggles.

“You sure you want to do
