Chapter Nine
Caught
DAWN GOT UP AT SIX the next morning, still surprised that neither Mr. nor Mrs. Miller realized that Dawn and Matt had gone out the previous night. She was fairly positive that, as a student there for punishment, she was not supposed to leave the house. On the other hand, given the personality she should to be affecting, it was the right move. She might be able to pass this Practical.
Once she finished braiding her hair, she left her room and found Zeke standing in the hall. She remembered to slump her shoulders and looked him over. He was in pajama pants and a shirt that looked like it had seen better years, hair mussed like heâd just gotten out of bed though his eyes looked alert. âWhat?â
âI know you,â he said. He looked over her face carefully. âWeâve met before.â
âWhatever,â she said, pushing past him. He may be familiar, but he wasnât her target.
Zeke caught her hand as she walked away and kept her from going. âZekeâs in charge,â he said, his voice low. âThat was the last thing you said. We were in the Childrenâs Wing at Simya Academy. You had black hair. You were it and that was bad...â
His grip on her hand loosened and he brought his other hand up to his head. âThere was something wrong,â he continued. âYou went to find someone and never came back. Someone was crying. A girl. Carly...?â
Dawn pulled her hand away, a chill running down her spine and spreading across her shoulders. It sounded familiar, but she didnât remember any of that. There was a Childrenâs Wing at Simya, but she had no memories from that time. No one did.
She walked away, leaving Zeke in the hall desperately trying to remember what he could. He seemed to know about Simya and it almost seemed like he was from there once. That didnât make any sense. No one left Simya Academy except for Practical Exams and graduation placements.
She resisted the urge to turn back. She had to get to work.
Without Ricky hovering over her shoulder for the day, Mr. Miller had taken his place, watching her every move but saying nothing. Dawn was able to ignore him as she set about the routine laid out for her.
She was left alone with her thoughts. Zeke had unsettled her with just a few words. She couldnât remember any of what he talked about, but her pounding heart and swimming head told her it had happened.
This was distracting her from her test. Sheâd made good progress with Matt last night. Her unwillingness to take off the layers of fishnets and tight clothing that sheâd struggled to get on in the first place seemed to only make him more determined to find ways to impress her. All it would take was one more push to get him to leave.
But something nagged at her, wanting to know about what Zeke was remembering. If she really did know him once and he really escaped, she wanted to know.
