Chapter 7

WHICH is probably why I’m here, roaming our house as a ghost, trying to get Scott to see me. It’s such a cliché. Will I die for good if I manage to bid my farewell to him, or will I stay forever, turning into a restless spirit?

I claw at my throat, gasping for air, reliving the last seconds of life, the utter terror and panic. I’m shaking so bad, I wonder if it’s possible for me to fly apart.

I shake my head. That would defeat the purpose of my being here. That thought clears my head enough for me to pull my hands away from my throat. I stare at my hands. Not a trace of blood on them.

My head whips around to the source of heart-wrenching sobs. Scott sits up and puts pressure on his injured shoulder with his hand. I detect the first shadow of what will become a large bruise blossoming on his face.

“You’re a monster,” he accuses Justin.

“Oh please. That’s not even original.” Justin flaps his hands dismissively. “Do you want to know why I tried to get into your pants? Because for some weird reason, Riley was convincing. I thought that… maybe you really are the key to happiness. The little shit even messes with my head when he’s dead.”

“You won’t ever find happiness. Monsters don’t deserve it. You don’t deserve it.”

Justin’s face twists and contorts in anger. I wish Scott would shut up. He’s going to get himself killed if he runs his mouth off like that. I won’t allow Justin to kill him. This… this spiral of insanity and destruction has to stop. It just has to.

On the other hand, what am I going to do? I’m a ghost, for fuck’s sake!

Frantically, I rack my mind for a solution but come up with nothing. I listen to Scott baiting Justin and suddenly I wonder if he’s riling up Justin deliberately. Does he want Justin to kill him? Maybe he believes we’ll be together again in the afterlife? But I’m not yet there, and I don’t know if that’s how it would work.

Justin doesn’t like Scott’s comments. His eyes cloud over, giving him an alien appearance. I remember that facial expression. He’s ready for the final strike.

My eyes dart around the room, hoping for inspiration to kick in, when I see the flashing red and blue lights of a police car, driving along our street. Acting on impulse, I summon up all my bottled up rage, run to the armchair, and fling it through the window.

The police car screeches to a halt and Justin shouts something. I don’t understand what. Rage fills me and I give it permission to sweep me up, engulf me to the fullest. I whirl around, pick up whatever I can get my hands on, and throw it at Justin. I force him to back off Scott and bring myself between him and my lover.

One of the patrolmen yells. I don’t understand what he says either. I’m beyond the point of caring what anyone says.
