He waited in her bedroom for half an hour, pacing from the window to the hearth and back to the window so many times that he nearly expected his feet to leave permanent furrows in the granite floor. Outside the sun climbed higher and higher into the stark blue summer sky. Velvet did not show up. How long could Laudine need to make the point that her nephew shouldn’t have died, and that Emeric should never end up with a crown on his head?

Jaghar muttered a curse. Longer than half an hour, it turned out.

He sank into the chair at her desk and pulled a sheet of scrap parchment from the upper drawer. If she didn’t return before he had to go see Rosin, at the very least he could give her an explanation for his absence, some answers to her questions.

Velvet, he scrabbled down. Then he stared at the parchment, a nagging headache emerging behind his eyes.

What was he supposed to write next? Sorry I couldn’t stay around, I’m off to go see the woman who killed your father for me. Love you. Jaghar. Demon be damned, that wasn’t the kind of revelation you could put in a letter, was it? Emeric’s treason alone would have been bearable, perhaps, but this was far more than Emeric’s treason – this was Rosin’s viciousness, and worse…

His thoughts wavered. Worse, his own stupidity. Rosin had made clear enough she wouldn’t let go of him, in that last conversation before he had followed Velvet to the Riverlands – and yet he had not even thought of keeping an eye on her at their return to Rock Hall. Velvet could hardly overlook how miserably he had failed her, if not worse, and did he really want her to come to that realisation alone, with no idea when he’d even be back?

With another curse he dipped her pen in the ink again. Hope Laudine didn’t give you too much trouble. I need to go see some people to get our evidence against Emeric. At least he wouldn’t run out without an explanation this time. If you wait for me here, I’ll be back as soon as possible to explain the full story. Couple of hours at most.

He hesitated a last moment, then added, quickly, Love you. Most of the servants couldn’t read anyway, and he didn’t expect anyone else would come in to snoop.

Still not a brilliant letter – as a matter of fact, she might still be rather unhappy about the lack of answers it contained – but he couldn't think of anything that would make her happy with the current state of affairs...

And he didn't have time to linger. With a curse he folded the letter before he could waste another five minutes hesitating, and left it on her desk as he hurried out of the room, out of Rock Hall. Less than half an hour, and he'd have to be in town to meet with Rosin – a meeting he couldn't delay, no matter how badly he wanted to delay it.
