Chapter Thirteen

Lucas still couldn’t believe he was doing this.

He sat at the bar of the coffee shop, on the corner of Union Square West and W 16th Street, listening to jazz and watching the people around him. They were having cocktails, coffee, and snacks, all talking, some gesticulating. Lucas kept glancing at his phone on the counter.

Matt was late.

Okay, so he was only three minutes late, but Lucas liked punctuality. Matt had suggested they meet there—except that wasn’t true, was it? There had been no suggestion about it. ‘Be there at ten,’ he’d texted.

Lucas shook his head. Demanding little—

“Hey, you made it.” Matt was at his side, dressed in a tight white T-shirt that clung to his firm body, and jeans that could have been sprayed on. Snug across his chest was the leather strap of his bag.

Lucas gave him a hard stare. “I made it all the way to Staten Island too. Anyone would think, listening to you, that I never set foot out of my building.” He tried hard not to focus on Matt’s firm pecs, his nipples poking at the fabric, the curve of his butt in those sinfully tight jeans, the way the denim clung to his thighs. God, he looks good.

Matt narrowed his gaze. “When was the last time you bought something that wasn’t online?”

Damn.

Matt smiled smugly. “As I thought.” He peered into Lucas’s cup. “Have you finished your coffee? Great. Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?” Lucas got down off his bar stool, making sure to pick up his phone.

“59th Street.” Matt grinned. “I have the perfect place to find a gift for Grandma. Now come on. We can get the subway here to Columbus Circle.”

Lucas frowned. “I said I’d go shopping with you. Nothing was mentioned about transportation. And if we’re doing this? We do it my way.”

Matt arched his eyebrows. “Which means what, exactly? We go there by limo?”

Lucas smiled. “Taxi will do just fine. So go hail us one.”

Matt rolled his eyes. “And you call me bossy.” He strode out onto the street and headed toward 17th Street. “We’ll have more luck on 5th Avenue,” he called over his shoulder.

“Yes, sir.” Lucas couldn’t help smiling. Then Matt came to a halt and waited for Lucas to catch up to him.

“I forgot something.”

“What?” Lucas demanded. “Is it something important?”

Matt nodded. “I think so.” He leaned in and kissed Lucas on the cheek. “Good morning. It’s good to see you.” His voice was soft, with no hint of the teasing quality from earlier.

Lucas chuckled. “Yeah, it has to have been all of, what, twenty-two hours since you saw me last.” That didn’t stop him from putting his hand to Matt’s waist and leaning in to kiss him too, only this time lightly on the lips. “Good morning to you too.” His own voice sounded husky. “And now that we’ve gotten the important part out of the way, let’s go find a taxi.”

Matt grinned and strode ahead once more. “Then keep up.”

Lucas laughed. His Monday was shaping up to be a great day.
