CHAPTER 14
Rusty took off his hat and rubbed what little hair was underneath it. Puzzled, he opened his mouth to speak, but then thought better of it. He couldnât quite comprehend what he had been told, and really didnât want to think about what it meant, but he needed to hear it just once more to be sure.
âRun through it one more time, Mark. I want to make sure you didnât forget anything the first time around,â Rusty said.
Mark sighed. The big guy wasnât used to being as rattled as heâd been the last hour or so, but the adrenaline was finally wearing off. When heâd first seen the three vehicles roll up, he thought that help might finally be on the way; that things might be looking up for the first time in the last few days. That wasnât the case. Heâd been summarily ambushed and nearly ran over, or at least thatâs how he told it to Rusty.
âI saw them rolling down Route 61 pretty quick, especially for people who I assume donât know the roads that well. I donât go that fast down through there, so they mustâve been really hauling ass. As soon as I saw that it was military vehicles, I stepped around the guardrail. I figured they were going to stop me and ask what the hell I was doing, but they didnât even slow down. They just barreled past, slammed on the brakes, and went hauling ass up into Cave Springs Road,â Mark explained.
âAre you sure they were military? Is there any way that they couldâve been someone with one of those surplus Hummers?â Amanda asked.
Mark shook his head. âI didnât get a good look at them, but I know for sure the front vehicle was a Humvee. Not one of those pussy civilian models, either. This one was armored and had a turret on the top of it. I doubt you can get that stuff even with the full options package.â
Amanda shot him a glare. She loved him like a brother; hated him like one sometimes, too.
âAnd the other two? What were they? Some kind of deuce-and-a-half?â Rusty asked.
Mark nodded. âSomething like that. I havenât seen what they were driving before, but the size and diesel engine gave it away as something like that. I donât know how the hell they kept them from rolling over as fast as they were going, but it was pretty nimble for a big truck.â
Rusty scratched his head again. âMilitary in Cave Springs. I have no idea why they would be up there. Weâve had them up there only once before that I know of, and that was afterâ¦â
A light bulb flickered inside of Rustyâs mind. It was slowly starting to make sense.
âAfter what?â Amanda and Mark asked, nearly simultaneously.
âAfter 9/11. I was about a month or so, maybe less, after 9/11 that we had some of the military up there for some kind of training. There was a unit that was there building something for Uncle Sam.
