CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

TUESDAY 1145 HOURS

“What is this place? It looks like the backdrop for a horror movie. Are you sure this is the right address?” asked Katie.

“Definitely. I knew it was somewhere like this, so we need to check it out. Robin’s mom claimed that she had sent letters here. I think she was telling the truth.”

“Where would the mailbox even be?” said Katie, searching the outside of the building. “There’s no mailbox or mail slot that I can see.”

McGaven parked on the side a short distance from the building and then opened the door. “C’mon, we’re here now, so let’s go take a look.”

Katie was reluctant. She feared it would only be another dead end and was finding it hard to keep up her enthusiasm. She felt the killer was getting further out of reach even while they checked out these places that didn’t render anything useful. Even so, her curiosity and determination forced her out of the car.

“This place could tell some stories,” said McGaven trying to bring up Katie’s spirits.

“And then some.” Katie walked closer to the building. It appeared to be a three-story industrial building in extreme need of repair, which most likely had once housed a business like a metal fabrication shop, auto mechanic garage, or something along the lines of textiles or construction. The top floor would have been the administrative offices. The siding was cement with a steel-enforced structure—now dated and crumbling. There was a long line of six large roll-up doors along the back. Two doors led to an inside staircase.

McGaven walked around the back of the building.

Weeds had grown to immense heights as if they were in a cornfield. Garbage had been strewn across the back for quite some time—large bulging trash bags, old mattresses, crates, miscellaneous pieces of broken furniture, along with faded labels and drinking cups, and wooden pallets.

“I don’t know, Gav. It doesn’t look like anyone has been here in a decade.”

“What I didn’t tell you…”

“What do you mean? You holding out on me?” she snapped.

“I did a quick background on the building through the county assessor’s website from my phone and it appears that Red Hawk Real Estate seems to have sold this property twelve years ago to KLM Enterprises, LLC.”

“The same KLM that owns Eagle Ridge Camp?” said Katie surprised. “But how can that be? Mr. Green and Red Hawk Real Estate said that he only dealt with them through emails. And the printouts of the contract we were given had only PO boxes and no main contact. Tracing emails only sent us in circles and back to dummy corporations and phony email addresses. We need to keep digging. There has to be more information about them.”

“Sounds like someone has made an extreme effort to keep their name from being connected to the properties,” he said. “And there’s no one to call to ask permission to see the interior.”

Katie still studied the building. “You’re right. There’s no real estate listing—it’s just sitting here deteriorating. Let’s get a closer look.
