They spoke with the bowyer and it turned out he only had two functioning crossbows. The others they sold were wood and rubber band toys that were only good for launching marshmallows.

“I should say I had two,” the bowyer said. He was a thin, balding man in his late forties dressed up like Robin Hood.

“What do you mean?” Brandon asked.

“One went missing a couple days after we arrived. I was in the middle of offloading our inventory when I realized it had disappeared.”

“Why didn’t you report this?” Alex asked.

The bowyer glanced at Brandon before turning to Alex. “No offense, but in the past, security hasn’t been too keen on protecting our assets. Unless Mr. Sterling owned the shop, no one seemed to care much.”

Alex frowned. “That was before I started. I need to know when this sort of thing happens. If it happened to you, it could have to others.”

First, Hamish’s knife, now a crossbow. The murderer was an accomplished thief as well.

“Understood,” the bowyer said. “But it’s a little late now. That crossbow is worth at least three hundred dollars.”

“I’ll take a report when I’m done with the chief here.”

“Did you suspect anyone in particular?” Brandon asked.

“Of course not,” the bowyer said, scratching the back of his neck. “Because if I did, they’d be hearing from me, even if it meant sticking an arrow in their backside.”

“Leave catching the thief to my team,” Alex said. “And the police.”

The bowyer nodded doubtfully. “If you say so.”
