“Oh. We’ve been here before,” I say when we get to the bar that Summer has chosen for our night out. It’s down one of the back roads in Avalon, and I’m secretly glad that she didn’t drag me to a club. The quiet bar, which is a little too trendy to be a pub, is much more comfortable for me.

“Yeah, you seemed to like it so I thought we could start here tonight. You know, somewhere comfortable and familiar.”

I choose to ignore Summer’s ‘start here’ and instead tell her, “I didn’t hate it.”

“Well that’s high praise indeed!” She laughs, dragging me inside by the hand, while I tug on the short matte silver sequinned dress she’s put me in.

When it becomes clear that no amount of tugging is going to make the dress magically grow another six inches, I give up and wrap the black leather jacket tighter around me.

Summer chuckles. “Come on. You grab a table and I’ll get the drinks.”

I do as she says, relieved that the bar isn’t too busy. I guess now school’s in session the bigger clubs are more popular. There’s quiet chatter which can just be heard over the classic rock music that’s pumping from the speakers. I like it. I choose a booth table in the back and slide in. From here I can see most of the space, and it feels safe to have my back to the wall. I lose myself in ‘Nothing Else Matters’ by Metallica while I wait for Summer.

I do appreciate her choosing this place; I know it’s not her scene at all. I guess if she wants to move on somewhere else after a few drinks, I owe it to her after this.

“Hey, here you go. I got you a G and T with no shit.” She grins at me as she pushes my drink across the wooden table towards me. I grin back at the memory from the last time I was here, enjoying a little inside joke.

My mind wanders to the handsome man who offered to buy me a drink. I was so uncomfortable at being approached by a stranger that I barely glanced his way. All I remember is his smart suit, shiny shoes and perfectly tied laces. I liked how polished and well put together he was. But for the life of me, I couldn’t tell you what he looked or sounded like. My heart was pounding too hard to take in details like that.

“So, erm, how are you?” I ask awkwardly. Summer may be my best – and only – friend in the world, but I still find small talk difficult.

“I’m really good, MT.” Summer beams at me. “I met someone.”

I’ve been around Summer long enough to know that this is excited girl-speak for ‘I really fancy this guy’. I’ve also learnt that the appropriate response is not to scrunch my nose up in disgust, but to reciprocate her excitement.

“Oh? Tell me more…” It’s all the prompting Summer usually needs to get the conversation rolling.
