“He’s weird—like really weird—but Poe wasn’t involved in what happened to Henry,” Spenser said. “Henry apparently bought a boatload of drugs from him.”

“That’s going to shock a lot of people.”

“I’m sure it will. But we can’t concern ourselves with that. Our only concern is figuring out who nearly killed him.”

“I assume that’s why we’re here,” Amanda said.

“It is.”

“What are you thinking?”

“I’m thinking that Poe said Henry bought enough ecstasy to feed an entire party,” Spenser replied. “I want to know who he partied with.”

“Then this all makes sense now.”

“Glad I could provide you with some enlightenment,” Spenser said with a quiet laugh.

They sat in an empty classroom waiting for the students they’d requested to be brought in to talk to them. Not surprisingly, Spenser had asked for his closest friends on the baseball team.

“They wouldn’t talk to us before,” Amanda started. “What makes you think we can get them to talk to us now?”

“We know more than we did the last time we talked to them. I’m hoping we can rattle somebody into talking to us.”

“So, this is just a bluff?”

“Pretty much, yeah,” she admitted. “But right now, it’s about the only card we have to play.”

The door to the room opened and half a dozen of Henry’s teammates sauntered into the room. Amanda and Spenser were perched on the edge of the teacher’s desk at the head of the room and the kids walked in and dropped heavily into the desks in the front row. They all sat casually, all of them wearing matching cocky expressions on their faces.

“Thanks for coming in, guys,” Spenser said.

“It’s not like we had much of a choice,” said Brian Englund, the leader of the group, with Henry still in the hospital.

“What’s with the attitude, Brian?” Spenser asked.

He gave her a dismissive shrug. “I just don’t like missing class.”

Amanda scoffed. “I’ve seen your grades, Brian. It kind of seems like you’re okay with missing class to me.”

He flashed her a grin. “She’s funny.”

“So?” Spenser pressed. “I ask again. What’s with the attitude?”

“We just don’t have anything to tell you that we didn’t tell you the last time we talked,” he replied. “And it just feels like you’re trying to say we did something to Henry.”

“We’re not saying you did anything,” Spenser said evenly. “We’re just trying to gather information that will help us find the person who did this. Don’t you want us to find the person who attacked your friend?”

“Of course we do,” Brian said.

“Then why not help us?”

“Fine. How can we help?”

Spenser took in the small group of kids. Brian seemed to be the designated mouthpiece as the others sat idly by, just watching the situation play out. She glanced at their shoes, making a mental note of the types they wore as her mind flitted back to the two distinct treads she found at the crime scene. She was still waiting for Arbery to get his report back to her and she hoped that maybe it would yield some answers. Or at least give her a way to narrow down her suspect list.
