Pace
We have discarded all concepts like time and relevance. Itâs partly because of a rural mode of communication, partly a Maori one. There is a strong suspicion and dislike of the city hustler who breezes in with preconceived ideas and tries to mould people. The tempo that works is a bit like the one you adopt for a tolls operator: âtransfer charge, person to person, number calling, person calling, number charged to, number calling from, whoâs callingâ â if you break the sequence or accelerate the pace you destroy the rhythm and communication collapses. Within the right tempo, you have to approach the subject of conversation in slow concentric circles, deal with it, and back out gradually the way you came in.
Interrogative interviewing too is out for old people. You have to nominate the subject and then let the interviewee talk without interruption, whaikorero-style. Itâs slow but itâs worth it. Given time to think at their own pace, people are more likely to come up with verbal gems. Or, if you want short answers, set up a group conversation making clear what you want. If it is not clear, be reconciled to a little shooting and a lot of editing.
