Hanging suspended in the ageless currents of the pacific ocean, Sasha drifted in and out of consciousness. By instinct alone, she continued to hold her breath, never fully succumbing to the effects of the powerful tranquilizer now coursing through her system. In the dark of her mind, the face of the doomed frogman appeared. Blurry at first, but then crisp and clear; the sweat beaded on his brow, the fear in his eyes. Such conviction, even in the face of death. Even as he placed the barrel of his pistol beneath his chin. So shall we go.
A sharp bump against her midsection caused Sashaâs eyes to flutter open. She turned her head and stared into the endless blue-black depths. The ocean called to her, begging her to join it forever. Another bump, this time harder. The pain in her side jolted her to her senses, a spike of adrenaline whipping her back into the present. A cloud of blood puffed out from the wound in her side as the sharkâs tail fin disappeared in the gloom. She hadnât even felt the bite. A pall of dread descended upon her. The next pass wouldnât be a bump. Sheâd be missing a limbâor worse.
Sashaâs movements slowed to a crawl, and the tissues of her lungs tingled. A faint reminder that sheâd have to return to the surface sooner than later. And when she did, Jager and his men would stand ready to recapture her. Or maybe kill me this time, she thought. Better that than allow them to brainwash her into being a weapon for them.
From out of the gloom, the hammerhead shark shot in toward her, its jaws wide. Stirred to life by some primal instinct to survive, Sasha wrenched her body to the side, narrowly dodging the vicious attack. Sasha drove her arm to the elbow into the sharkâs gill slits as it passed. The creature bucked then launched into the depths, dragging Sasha with her. Twisting and gyrating, they descended, leaving a trail of hazy blood in their wake.
Sasha screamed, bubbles streaming from her lips. She clawed at the predatorâs inner gill lining. With a final savage jerk, she snatched a hole in the Hammerheadâs side. Slinging the remains free, she watched as the shark thrashed a few more times, then sank into the deep trailed by a cloud of red.
A pang of guilt struck her in the chest. Never in her life had Sasha wanted to kill any creature simply for doing what came naturally to it. Yet, the feeling washed away as her animal nature took over. A basic instinct: kill or be killed.
Her lungs burned for air. Now free of the shark, her instincts turned to keep her from drowning. Sasha swam for the surface, sweeping greedy handfuls of water behind her. Her vision narrowed, and limbs cramped. Panic swelled in her chest, causing her heart to flutter. The ocean, a place that felt much more welcoming to her than anywhere else, now wanted her dead.
Another bump against her leg.
