Chapter 7

The women split up—Fortune and Ida Belle left to do research while the other two walked to the park at Gertie’s suggestion. Mercy showed Gertie where she entered and the route she took.

Gertie turned in a circle, examining the surroundings. “You were standing here when it happened?”

Mercy closed her eyes and focused on the events of Saturday night. “I recall being grateful for the full moon so I didn’t fall in the motel parking lot. I chased Stallings into the park, and I ran past the entrance sign. Then he stopped, so I stopped—” An involuntary shiver skittered down her spine, and she unconsciously touched her head. “There’s no doubt about it, Gertie. It was no accident.”

Gertie remained silent, hoping Mercy would remember more details. But after a minute she asked, “Anything else?”

Mercy bit her lip in frustration. “Nothing. What next?”

“I think you know,” Gertie said quietly.

“I feel like a hypocrite.” Mercy’s head drooped as they proceeded to the Sheriff’s Department. “Making socks for TV and now reporting him as a criminal.”

“We don’t know for a fact that he’s responsible. But you’d feel worse if he attacked someone and you could have prevented it,” Gertie said as Mercy opened the front door and Kyle looked up to greet them. “Is Carter in?” Gertie asked, craning her neck and looking down the hall to Carter’s office while Mercy set TV’s socks on Kyle’s desk.

Mercy smiled at him because Gertie was already edging toward the hall, and he just waved his hand. Trying to stop Gertie was like trying to sew up a perfectly grilled sausage. Once the casing burst and the juices flowed out, with the crisp skin lightly browned—he licked his lips and then remembered where he was. Thankfully, the women were already down the hall. Kyle took a quick look at the clock and hoped Walter wasn’t out of grilling dogs.

Carter sighed after hearing Mercy’s account, and he left the office to ask Kyle to locate TV and pick him up. Then he returned and took his seat, rubbing his forehead. “You know I have to hold him on suspicion, right?”

Gertie bristled. “This isn’t Mercy’s fault,” she said bluntly.

His green gaze rested briefly on Gertie before moving to Mercy. “I just hope you aren’t suffering the effects of a concussion.”

Mercy knew he wasn’t worried about her wellbeing but with the consequences of what she remembered. And she didn’t blame him for feeling that way. She had no desire to accuse anyone of the deed, especially TV. “This doesn’t make me feel any better,” she declared. “I’m willing to get checked again for a concussion, if it will help.”

Carter scowled. “That won’t help. Is there anything else you want to report?”

From his tone of voice and Gertie’s sad expression, Mercy understood that pointing the finger at TV wasn’t sitting well with them. Unfortunately, she couldn’t fix the situation. She shook her head and asked, “Have you heard anything about the missing persons?”

“There have been no official updates,” he replied through tight lips.
