INDIRECT function in Excel converts a text string into a valid range reference. For instance, combine the SUM function and the INDIRECT function.

The formula above reduces to =SUM(INDIRECT("E4:E7")). The INDIRECT function converts the text string "E4:E7" into a valid range reference. In other words, =SUM(INDIRECT("E4:E7")) reduces to =SUM(E4:E7).
