Driven by the will to win, competitors in the sport of practical shooting have developed many useful upgrades, including extended magazine basepads that increase capacity by as many as five extra rounds. This means the owner of this Glock model G34 may have as many as twenty- three chances to deliver 9mm ordnance in the event of an attack. Basepads applied to the seventeen-round magazines are left to right, from Taylor Freelance and Dawson Precision.
High-capacity handguns are an excellent choice for home defense because they are highly maneuverable. They can be turned quickly to point one direction after another. They can also be operated easily with one hand should the other hand become injured or unavailable due to a struggle or simply performing a chore like opening or closing a door.
A handgun of any type is easier to defend against a takeaway. To begin with, half the surface area (or more) of a handgun is locked inside the hand. A long gun offers a greater amount of area to defend and in a struggle becomes a source of leverage that can work for or against you. It is more likely for your opponent to have exactly the same amount of leverage when fighting over a long gun than when struggling over a handgun, which is dominated by the first person to grip it properly. The grip of a handgun is the safest point of contact. Most of what is left exposed on a handgun—the muzzle and the ejection port, or on a revolver the cylinder gap (the gap between the cylinder and the opening to the barrel)—is dangerous to your attacker.
The natural length and extension of a long gun makes moving muzzle-forward through a doorway or other blind advance, no matter how momentary, more dangerous than with a handgun. A handgun can be retracted and held close to the body. This makes it easier to lead with your eyes. Furthermore, one hand may be extended to defend while the other hand holds the gun, as long as you keep your free hand out of line with the muzzle.
When shooting a handgun around a point of cover or concealment, it is easier to account for the line of sight versus the actual path of the bullet. Line of sight is the unobstructed view of the target with the eyes held at the appropriate level to align the sights. A standard configuration rifle or carbine may have a differential of one inch or more between the front sight and the center of the barrel bore. But the AR15 or AK-47 platforms may have your eyes tracking as much as two and a half inches or more above the path of the bullet. This means when firing a long gun from cover or concealment you may clearly see the target aligned perfectly in your sights but the muzzle is blocked. Until you realize the problem, all you’re going to hit is the doorframe or some other impediment. This problem is much easier to
