“I will do what our people need. I have always done as my forefathers have whispered I must,” he said, closing his eyes and lifting his face to the sky.

But to go willingly to his death? “Matiro-” His fingers came up and pressed against her lips. “I’ve traveled, in my dreams, down the paths our people will take if I turn away from what must come, Asmine. Will you see our people falter? See the wood fall? Our protections have been breeched.” He moved his hands away from her mouth and Asmine shuddered as her lips were left buzzing from his touch.

His hands now threaded through her hair and unconsciously, she arched into his touch. Her heart pounded inside her chest, slow and rhythmically, as her head started to spin. “The sorcerers will rebuild it…but not here. Something in the land is tainted now, broken.”

Asmine quivered when she felt his body against hers. She had moved even closer, without realizing it, until she was leaning against him, her fingers curling into the hard ridge of muscle at his neck as he spoke. Finally, through the fog of need and hunger, his words penetrated and she lifted her lashes. “We are in danger here, are we not?”

Matiro sighed against her forehead, his lips moving as he pressed a line of butterfly kisses against her skin. “Yes. We have been in danger since the protective barriers fell. The enemy will think to move against us, if he hasn’t already. It is time for the People of the Wood to move deeper into our realm, away from these lands.”

Grave words…so why wasn’t she more frightened? Asmine knew the answer to that. It had to do with the fact that his hands were sliding down her neck, one curving around, arching her face up his, while the other hand smoothed down the unadorned front of her long robe, his fingers circling around her nipple before he cupped her breast, milking the nipple with slow, skillful strokes of finger and thumb.

She felt each touch in the pit of her belly, heat flooding her sex. Against her belly, she felt the throb of his cock under his trousers.
