Chapter Three
Following a map I found at a convenience store in town, I traveled deeper into the woods in hopes I would find the tiger's den. There had only been sightings of him out here, not a pinned location of where he lived. Maybe I would be the one to solve the mystery. Then again, perhaps to get in his good graces, I wouldn't tell a soul of his secret hideaway.
The moon shone through a lattice of leaves, highlighting the dirt path. The wind slightly rustled the branches as the scent of flowers and tree sap greeted my nose. I rubbed my arms to retain some kind of warmth, feeling maybe this was a bad idea searching for him in the darkness.
I came to a clearing in the middle of the woods where a single enormous tree stood in the middle. I studied the tree, as it looked nothing like the others surrounding it. The branches reached out like long arms in every direction creating a vast canopy overhead.
SNAP!
Blindsided by a hard blow to the face, I stumbled sideways.
"Let's just go, Jessica." A whiny voice I recognized as belonging to Jamie.
"Shut up," Jessica, the evilest twin, said.
At least Jamie had felt remorse for what she had done. The hit made my vision blurry and my face warm and puffy.
"I beg you; please stop," Jamie pleaded.
But instead, she pummeled me to the ground, growling like an animal. I tried to kick Jessica off me, but my efforts fell short. She was stronger than me; all that time as a base for the cheerleading squad was paying off.
"No!" Jessica yelled. A flurry of punches followed, and soon I lost track of where she had hit me; my whole body was numb. My mind was dizzy, and I couldn't see out of my left eye. I was sure my nose was broken, too, because I felt blood trickle from my nostrils as I struggled to breathe in air.
"Goddamn it, Serena, look what you made me do."
Squinting with my good eye, I saw Jessica clutching her head in anger. I seized this opportunity and made a run for my life. My lungs felt like they were on fireâI could hear a crackle every time I inhaled. With my hand over my chest, I struggled to maintain speed.
"Youâre not going anywhere." Jessica pulled me back by my hair and spun me around. Her hands were now on my neck. âI hate you for driving me this crazy. You think you're so damn perfect. Well, I'll show you."
How could anyone hate me this much? Was it because I got into NYU and she didn't?
"Jessica, please. Let's go home," I heard Jamie cry.
But she squeezed down, shoving me up against a tree, the bark scraping into my skin stung. She continued to push what little air I had left out of me. âItâs all your fault I will be stuck in this shitty town.
Okay, she was mad about NYU. They only had one opening, and it was mine.
