I was on the edge of my seat waiting to hear. “Go on. I said.”

“You see, by this time I was feeling angry at having been lied to about the machine,” said Mr. Hatherley. “Never mind that they were offering to pay me large sum of money. I do not like being lied to. I went back into the room and looked about, and told them angrily I could give them better advice to avoid further problems if they told me what the machine was really for, as clearly there had never been any Fuller’s earth brought to this press.”

“What happened?” I demanded.

“Well, the Colonel and Mr. Ferguson stepped out of the room and, before I realized what they were about, they closed and locked the door, with me inside. And then I heard the machine start up, and saw the metal ceiling moving down to crush me to death.”
