Jimmie Dale stared out the French windows at the windswept grass that swayed almost in rhythm with the ocean waves frothing restlessly beyond the short cliff at the end of the property. He felt as restless as Poseidon's domain appeared, which was entirely contrary to the point of his sojourn here in the Sussex countryside, so far from the bustling New York City that was his natural stomping grounds. This was meant to be a vacation, after all — though friends had chuckled at that description, wondering what an idle dilettante like him needed with a vacation. A vacation from what? they had asked good naturedly when he made it known he would be quitting the city for a time. But how could he explain that his days were often far more full, far more adventurous, and — perhaps most significantly — far more dangerous than any suspected?

If only he could tell them — or tell anyone, in fact. But no, there were some secrets that must be kept. Especially as they were not his secrets alone.

And once again, he thought — of her!

He flung open the glass doors and let the cool sea air wash over him, rustling his hair, filling his lungs. Even here, even now, she filled his thoughts, dancing elusively before his mind's eye; her, a woman he had never truly met, but who he was convinced he loved all the same. He could only speculate about the shape of her nose, could only ponder upon the possible hue of her locks, could only idly play with possible names that might be hers.

For he knew her simply as The Tocsin. And for now, he had to content himself with that being enough. For since she had intruded herself into his life, Jimmie's existence had become one of not infrequent danger, but she had also filled it with something more, something greater: excitement, passion, and perhaps most importantly, purpose. For Jimmie had a secret life, that of the notorious criminal and underworld figure, The Gray Seal — an identify itself which was but another disguise, for in truth Jimmie used his Gray Seal alias, with the unseen aid of The Tocsin, to fight crime, not to implement it.

“Excuse me, sir.”
