Matthew emphasizes the gentleness of the coming ruler who, in LXX Zechariah 9:9, comes with righteousness (dikaios) and salvation (sōzōn), to put an end to war and oversee an era of global peace (Zech. 9:10).

The next citation comes during the Last Supper:

Then Jesus told them, ‘This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:

‘‘I will44 strike the shepherd,

and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’’

But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’ (26:31–32; Zech. 13:7; cf. Mark 14:27)
